Exclusive: Early recording of Susan Boyle singing 'Killing Me Softly'
Posted by SBFII Admin on April 20, 2009

A new recording of Susan Boyle has been unearthed by the Telegraph.co.uk, featuring two songs - an early version of the blues ballad 'Cry Me a River' and 'Killing Me Softly with His Song'.

Susan recorded the two songs ten years ago and distributed them to only a handful of her closest friends in the village of Blackburn, West Lothian, where she lives with cat Pebbles.

Susan sent the recording to record companies, TV stations and radio talent competitions including Michael Barrymore's My Kind of People, for which she later auditioned but was rejected.

The recording was made at her own expense with Miss Boyle telling friends at the time that she had "spent all her savings" on it.

I want to see her sing "Somewhere over the Rainbow", another great melancholic song about lost dreams, sung so beautifully originally by such a tragic figure that no one has dared to do it again, but I think Susan has the good will and certainly the chops, to pull it off. If she did that for the semis, she'd really steal our hearts.

Susan Boyle is going to be great. Many more can relate to her and then get to enjoy her amazing voice.

Keep going Miss Boyle - just the way you are. You are fantastic and an example to more of the world than most of those already famous.

I sure would like to buy your CD as soon as it is available.

Many thanks for sharing your wonderful talent.

Susan, I'm sure you've heard this a million times but my heart soared after I heard you sing. I cried first though of course. I wish we could get Britain's Got Talent in Williamsburg VA as I would watch you everytime I had the chance! You are truly an inspiration to us all and a shining light in these dark days!
Posted by Boudica67 on April 20, 2009
Susan, from the first time I saw you I thought you were so adorable and sweet. I was shocked that the audience reacted the way they did because I thought, "Give her a chance" because I thought you would give a good performance. I was wrong, you gave a GREAT performance. I hope things go great for you and you get to be like Elaine Paige, your idol. I wish you only the best and all the happiness. You strike me as a genuinely happy person.

Just to let Susan Boyle and all know that our church features her song on Britain's Got Talent as part of the sermon on Saturday and Sunday about perceptions of people and how they are dead wrong and contrasting this with the disciples and how they had not perceived what would happen when Jesus was crucified.

It was a powerful message about people being "dead wrong." Susan Boyle - you are uplifting so many people

God Bless You!

Ms. Boyle...I want to tell you that I was brought to tears by your amazing voice. You are a true gift to this world and someone to be celebrated. I am horrified by the media's comments regarding outward appearance and I wanted to tell you that I had been subject to the same scrutiny for years. It caused me to write a children's book called "Stinky the Bulldog" that teaches adults and children not to judge others based on outward appearance but by what is inside and what they give to the world. Do not ever let those who only see the outside or feel a need to judge you based on anything outward get you down...you are a wonderful gift to the world and never forget that! Dear Susan – I can only hope that, somehow, amongst the thousands, this letter will find its way to you. I’m not tech-savvy enough to know how to post online an open letter to you directly, but I trust the universe and God, that, if it is meant to be, then someone out there will see to it that you read these words. Your impact on this world has been far larger than you know. You have changed the lives of millions around the world. Those changes may appear on the surface to be subtle changes (those lessons in pre-judgment), but any change for the better is actually quite phenomenal and in this case, that small change in the lives of millions is one that will carry farther than you can ever imagine or know. The slight change in thinking amongst those millions will spread like ripples in the water to everyone they interact with, and then ripples will spread from those people to everyone they interact with…and from there into eternity. The ripples that you created will be felt throughout all generations. (It’s a great lesson to all of us that what we do and how we act right now today has a much greater impact than we know.) God has used you and your life to work miracles. You may think simply that you have worked a miracle in your own life, but, Susan Boyle, you have worked miracles in the world! I pray earnestly with all my heart that each and every one of your dreams comes true. We often find (sometimes a bit later in life) that what truly brings the greatest happiness of all is finally learning your own value, your own worth, finally feeling and KNOWING that you are loved deeply by God and at last learning to love yourself exactly as you are. Your song, your voice is incredible. It moved millions to tears. But you must learn and know that it’s not just your beautiful voice that makes you so worthy. You are worthy because you are YOU, because you are a precious child of God. Please stop judging yourself for the things you haven’t achieved yet. You were valuable beyond words before that wonderful night on Britain’s Got Talent. You just didn’t realize it. You couldn’t see it because you were remembering the bullying and telling yourself (and the world) about what you didn’t have rather than about what you did have. Recognize and appreciate the love that already exists in your life and the love that exists in your life will grow. The very deep love from the two ladies in the audience (relatives?) was apparent. It was deep, true, unconditional and all-encompassing. I never heard either of them speak a word, but no words were necessary - it was written all over their faces - they truly wanted for you exactly what you wanted for yourself. They were barely able to breathe at first, so great was their hope that all would go well for you. That is love. Please know that the bullies who teased you so mercilessly did so because they had not yet learned their own value and worth. Their own deep insecurities caused them to attempt to establish some semblance of self-worth and power by trying to make you feel somehow “less” and therefore making themselves feel “more”. In doing so, they clearly caused you great pain. I send you love and pray that you choose now to transform the pain of those difficult times by recognizing simply that their bullying was actually a Call for Love. Pray that those former tormentors find (or recognize) that love for which they call, that they find the ability to love themselves and to know that they are worthy, and that they, too, are precious children of God, valuable beyond measure. People that already know this have no need to torment others. While they may have tricked you into believing that they were right, that you were “less” and they were “more”, in truth, you had much more than they at the time. Recognize this and forgive them. Love them any way. Free yourself from the pain by loving them. Doing so will transform the pain into great peace and happiness. Forgiveness is always the answer and Love truly does conquer all. Love any way. Love Always. Never ever let the emotion you felt that night leave you! You didn’t just rock the audience, Susan – you rocked the world! In time, some may forget the message that you have taught (at least consciously), but the seeds of change in them were firmly planted and will continue to grow in them. In turn, all who interact with them will have seeds planted by them. God trusted in you, knew that you were strong and able, and through you, planted the seeds of change that He desired in the world. You are beautiful, Susan. And you have made the world a more beautiful, more loving place from now through eternity because of the ripples that YOU created. You are a testimony to the power of belief. And I KNOW your Mom and Dad are beaming with pride! You captured the hearts of everyone. You were put on this earth not simply to sing but to TEACH. And teach, you have, Susan Boyle! Thank you and God Bless You! With much love, Sally Sellett Phoenix, AZ

Wow--Susan, I was wondering when one of those 'demos' you recorded 'back when' would surface--'Killing Me Softly' is just as lovely as your renditions of 'Cry Me a River' and 'I Dreamed a Dream', even if I did have to go hunt up a full-length version of you singing it. (As someone else formerly mentioned, one can Google 'Susan Boyle, Killing Me Softly' and find it.) Maybe nobody gave you your fair chance back when you made this demo, or when you auditioned for a talent show years ago--but your time has now arrived, and in such a huge way! I greatly look forward to hearing more from you--you've definitely become one of those singers I will listen to again and again and again! Love you over here in Texas, and here's hoping you'll be able to record and release a CD later this year, as you have an enormous, anxiously awaiting public! Please enjoy your ride into 'fame', know that you earned and deserve all good things which can now come your way, and that millions of us are pulling for you!

One more thing to add: is there any way to get a full-length version of 'Killing Me Softly' posted right here on this fan site? I am unable to capture what I found on the 'Susan Boyle Killing Me Softly' search, but I'm wondering if some very computer-literate person might be able to do so? Seems it would belong HERE before any place else, so that we could come listen to it in its entirety more easily.

Well said TLW! It makes me sad that Susan was touched that Americans were so kind to her. Kindness should be expected. We are not all nasty and hauty. Most Americans don't have the money to travel the globe. Sadly, those who do represent us poorly. Susan, you bring tears to my eyes. I believe that only the angels in heaven have voices that can compare to yours. Don't change a thing about yourself. The world has fallen in love with you just the way you are... God Bless and Keep You!

I look on the internet every day for more news about you! Obviously many of us can't get enough. Can't wait to purchase your first CD (and many more!) Susan, they keep saying 'Don't judge a book by it's cover' and I just have to think that what we need to be saying is simply 'Don't judge!' You are a beautiful person inside and out. Trust me that people aren't simply jumping on the Susan Boyle bandwagon because you've become so famous. I was sick with a fever and miserably sick last Tuesday when my husband said 'I want to show you something that will make you feel better'. He showed me the video of you on 'Britain's Got Talent'. I was awestruck with your voice (and personality)and played the video over and over. We are all so blessed that you are sharing your heart and your beautiful gift. Sincerely, Another US Fan.

I think that this world is full of very talented people. I had two talent agencys years ago. One was located at 1576 Broadway in NY and the other agency was on Long Island, NY In most cases it is just luck!! Susan went through alot to get where she is. But if we have the TV shows today to help alot of people fill there dreams. I am happy that Susan Boyle is one of the lucy ones. I dreamed a dream in which the media ceased to devalue Susan Boyle with their pejorative words and phrases like ‘underdog’, ‘novelty value’ and ‘hairy angel’, and turned their attentions to some more deserving target for their negativity and pseudo-insightfulness. I dreamed a dream in which the mean-spirited among the world population looked into their own hearts and asked if they really found satisfaction in their unpleasantness. I dreamed a dream in which those of us who ‘get’ the Susan Boyle phenomenon – who truly understand it and are inspired by it – can simply be allowed to enjoy it, without analysis. Everything in the universe is about right timing, and this is her time. Speak out, Boyle fans – do any of you share my dream?

what is it about Susan ? Once you see the video you just have to keep watching it. Maybe it is total disbelief. In all my 60 years i have never hear a voice like Susans. I just hope she does NOT change, what a truly beautiful sole and the voice of an angel. Please Susan sing Ava Maria.
Posted by USimportfromUK on April 22, 2009
Susan, it is obvious from your own choice of songs recorded so far that you feel comfortable with great ballads. Your voice is suited to these and they give you the opportunity to imbue them with great emotion. Take advice, by all means, but rely on your gut instinct. It has got you to this point of admiration and respect already and proves that your own faith in yourself is the driving force of your popularity. People will tell you to do this and do that and try to mould you into something that you are not. Resist the urge to please everyone. By all means seek out advice from people you personally admire, whose friendship you would enjoy. Most important of all, ignore the media whose sole aim is to sell their product, often at the expense of personal feelings. They will knock you down as quickly as propel you upwards.

Wow! In the midst of all the bad news we have been unindated with these last few years in the news, etc. here comes this wonderful woman-Susan Boyle, to put not only smiles back on our faces but gives us hope and inspiration to know there is so many beautiful things to give us hope and reason that things will get better. Her voice is so pure, so angelic, so mesmerizing. She reminds me of my mother, who passed away at a young age, who too had a voice of an angel but never believed in herself to cut a demo for a talent agent who noticed her talent. I am so proud that Susan is fulfilling her dream and that the world is able to hear her voice now. I can't wait to buy her cd when it comes out. She would put many of today's young singers to shame with her voice. God bless you, Susan.

Dear Susan, "Killing Me Softly" has been a long-time favorite of mine. I thought no one but Roberta Flack could do justice to such a soulful ballad. You have blown my theory to bits with your rendition! I sat transfixed as I listened, with eyes closed, as you transported to me another world, another time. I am absolutely over-the-moon that you are at last receiving the recognition that was your due years ago!! Wish I could be present when you sing for the Queen!!!

I thought I'd wait for things to 'die down' before posting but I may have a long wait.

I live with chronic pain due to a genetic disorder that cause tumors to grow all over my body, mostly my spine. So I spend a lot of time flat on my back, in pain.

You brought tears to my eyes, dear one. Tears of joy, not pain. You move people, Susan, and you deserve everything that comes your way. Take it in, enjoy it and live life to the fullest. And remember who you really are, because that's what everyone is responding to....if you forget that and become like everyone else, the bubble will burst. I promise.

Miss Susan Boyle: Simply wonderful. Your voice and talent are marvelous. Your rendition of "I Dreamed A Dream" reached inside all of us who were fortunate enough to hear, and touched our hearts. I hope your dreams of becoming a famous singer become a reality as I would happily invest many hours to just hearing an angel sing. God Bless and Keep you

Dear Susan,

I never have heard such a stunning musical performance. I ( male 47 ) too was brought to tears by your performance. Not since the debut of Barbra Streisand have I heard such a sensational voice. It goes to prove NEVER judge a book by its cover!! Susan the world is yours and I can not wait to purchase your first cd and many more. I would love to hear a duet with Barbra Streisand!!!!! YOU ARE in that league!!!! Keep on singing!!!

I just love Susan Boyle, the caterpillar who emerged as a bright and beautiful butterfly. Thanks for coming out of your coccoon. You are an inspiration to us all.

I have one good old song in mind (one of the songs I loved), and I guess this one could probably become a sensational hit when sung by Susan. "At Seventeen," hope you could also record this song.

Love you Susan, Kudos and all the best!!! Whattagirl!!!

Susan I totally agree with with Sally from Phoenix, you not only have a beautiful voice, you are a beautiful person, a gift from God. The night you sang many became humble and honored you. I wish you all the luck in the world and look forward to hearing your beautiful voice on CD. You are AWESOME!!!!!!!!

To the record companies that she sent her recordings to.... a quote from the movie 'Pretty Woman', "Big Mistake!....Big!....Huge!!!! I bet they now wished they had taken her on!! Susan will, I know, go on to bigger and better opportunities. She deserves it! It is the world of 'commercialism' in music that puts real talent on the backburner in favour of 'flash' and 'commercial viability' that has the music industry in the trouble it's in. Remember...."Video Killed the Radio Star?" It's all about money, not talent anymore. If you listened to the majority of music, and not see the videos that are attached to it, you would realize that most of it is merely mediocre. If you look at Simon Cowell, when he is listening to auditions, you will notice that much of the time, he is not looking at the singer, but looking away and LISTENING to the voice! In Susan Boyle's voice, you can hear the rich tones, and the true passion, which is the quality of her voice! I, for one, can't wait until she puts out her first release. I will be one of the first to buy it. Keep singing Susan! You have a wonderful following! Enjoy the success that will soon come your way!

You will be pleasantly surprised and delighted by the quality and purity in this woman's voice. I love the song that she chose to sing because I am sure that the sentiments being expressed will have touched many of us during the course of our own lives. I don't know about you, but I was in tears by the end of this song....

I've been watching the Britain's Got Talent video on YouTube of Susan Boyle every day! It is a message of hope for everyone who has yet unfulfilled dreams that they desire to come true! Susan, you certainly did 'make the audience rock!"

I loved the look on the judges faces, as well. I never doubted or looked at her in that way before she sang. It's because I always try to give people the benefit of the doubt before judging them. Susan shows the world that ordinary people are just as special or more so than pop culture would have us believe otherwise!

I would like to see and hear Susan Boyle sing with Sir Tom Jones!

There is a God, and he has unveiled an angel, that angel is you Susan.

You have done in life things which should be done, taking care of a elderly parent, I have also.

Now God is sending your reward, you are truly a breath taking vocalist. You make me feel good.

Posted by Bev on April 24th, 2009 The World really got a positive boost in the heart listening to the emotional voice of Susan Boyle...Just what we needed to hear that allowed us to take a break from all the seriousness of cruel events in the World. Susan you are a breath of fresh air and your perseverence and honesty is honorable.

Susan you are a great inspiration and more importantly a very beautiful human being. You are being sent love by millions of people. Much success and happiness.

Honestly I do not get why all of these people are losing their minds over susan boyle...Susan you do have talent, but you aren't that great. Have none of you people saw an unattrative person sing before. I didn't know that only pretty people had talent. I am not trying to be mean to susan, i just don't understand how she is such big news. If i hear much more of this susan boyle crap i will lose my mind. My last comment and my point to this is that susan can sing but not that great. Just because she is VERY unattractive doesn't mean she cannot be talented. Oh and by the way to all of you christian idiots...God didn't send susan down for any reason because god doesn't exist. She is just an (now i feel like i am repeating myself, but you all seem like idiots so i am sure you won't care) ugly person that has an alright voice. I've heard better.

I would like to say what a beautiful voice you have Susan. It goes straight to the heart and soul of every person you hears it. I listened to you singing Cry Me A River and I think I almost did cry a river. God blessed you with such a wonderful gift. Your voice truly comes from the angels. I have to say that the post by WTFSB on April 24, 2009 is very annoying. If you don't want to hear about Susan's voice, THEN DON'T LISTEN TO IT. AND IF YOU DO NOT BELIEVE IN GOD, THEN JUST KEEP IT TO YOURSELF. ONCE AGAIN SUSAN KEEP UP THE BEAUTIFUL SINGING AND GOD BLESS YOU.

Susan, Susan, Susan, what can I say??????? You made me heart melted when I heard your voices. My god. It made me look up the sky and watch the eagles spread their wings and fly with your voices in it. What a beautiful feelings when I heard your voices. You can do it as you have such a beautiful gift. Every time I listened to you when you singing and I kept saying God Bless Her. Keep up with your spirit. I love you and again God Bless You.

Would all you people with tin ears spare us your insipid comments about Susan's singing ability and,no,you haven't heard better. Not only is her voice incredible, she has a genious for phrasing that floors me and no one has even mentioned it. One of Frank Sinatra's main concerns in his singing was his phrasing and ,in this, he was unsurpassed. After hearing her sing Cry Me a River and Killing Me Softly, I believe her ability is as good as it gets. I'm sure I couldn't explain this to to a tone deaf tin ear like WTFSB, but the phrasing sets the tone for how you want the words to come across. When she sings "told me love was too plebian." the word plebian sounds insulting. When Julie London (who I absolutely love) sings it, it sounds like an big word she just learned. Following that Susan hit a rhythm that accentuates " YOU were THOUGH with ME" almost in contempt and that really sets up her next line "now say you love me" with an incredulous air. My point is you should listen carefully to her phrasing, because she's a bloody genius at it!

Susan, what can I say except you are beautiful! Growing up in the beauty industry and working on thousands of clients with their hair and makeup, all my career I knew there was something more beautiful in people then what they portrayed. a beauty so deep your physical eye was in capable of seeing it, but the human heart could feel it and know it, and you demonstrated hope for our country of complete external and material focus, and demonstrated to millions that the beauty IS within. You are a testimony to miracles that transform the human heart. I dearly love you for your performance and opening our eyes to what is real! Though you had a hair makeover, I pray you saty true to your real beauty and not get sucked into comformity in our world of beauty. Be you, you are beautiful Thank you.

One of the things I love about this fan site is reading comments from all over the world, and hearing how Susan touches people who have such differing personalities and viewpoints. I enjoy the comments of folks such as Phoxee, above, who seems pragmatic, knowing exactly what he's listening for and listening to. Not everyone can identify the components that must come together to make music that is worth hearing.

I also enjoyed what Darlaloomis had to say. I never thought of a beautician being sensitive to the presence, or lack of, inner beauty in their clients. I guess that could be a hindrance or a help, as they attend to a person's exterior irregardless of what's inside. I can't help but think that it would be easier to 'work on' someone like Susan, though!
